Natural pain management - what's the deal?

“Early studies on CBD oil and pain relief are very promising...”
If pain is a part of your life, you’ll be familiar with everything that goes with it – painkillers and sleep aids for one thing. But you’ll also know the side effects of pain: inflammation, reduced mobility, depression, insomnia, anxiety, lack of energy… the list goes on.
Pain from a health condition or general life strains isn’t easily controlled by traditional medicine that causes side-effects. No-one wants to turn to Drugs that have high toxicity or are bad for the stomach- But Scientists in the US have discovered Cannabidiol (CBD), could give the same pain-relieving effects, without the rollercoaster ride.
Even Oxford University has realised the potential and are getting the brightest scientists in the country to study how we can use this ancient natural solution to solve our modern problems. Read more about the study here
No pain, all gain?
CBD is a non-psychotropic compound found in Industrial Hemp plants, which has proven to offer many physical and emotional benefits. Receptors in our brain and nervous system called endocannabinoids help to regulate our bodies’ behaviour in myriad ways, from motor function to mood, appetite and sensing pain. You can boost your Endocannabinoid System by taking the nutrients it was designed for: cannabinoids like CBD.
Tell me about the research…
Early studies on CBD oil and pain relief are very promising. A 2008 review assessed how well CBD works to relieve chronic pain and found it was effective in overall pain management without adverse side effects. It also concluded that CBD was beneficial in treating insomnia related to chronic pain. [1]
Another study, published in Clinical Rehabilitation, [2] examined the benefits of CBD, THC, and a combination of both in patients who suffered from neurogenic pain, like multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries. “Pain relief associated with both THC and CBD was significantly superior to placebo,” the researchers wrote. Not only did the patients experience significant relief, but in some cases, it also calmed other symptoms like muscle spasms.
It’s encouraging enough to make doctors and scientists sit up and take note, and most agree that further research is needed.
New clinical studies on the subject are in progress worldwide, right now.
So, the science of CBD is underway. What are they looking at?
Long-term pain can affect your mental state too. Here’s how CBD may be able to help a frazzled mind:
2. Anxiety Relief
A fraught nervous system can translate into anxiety. Tired, wired, and constantly on high alert, each small disturbance can feel like thunder tearing through your thoughts. Sound familiar? CBD is thought to soothe the nervous system, taking the edge off anxiety. [5]
3. PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder is reliving a traumatic event and is usually caused by an external trigger. Triggers lead to a fight or flight reaction, often resulting in shaking, fear, and a feeling of being disconnected.
Living with relentless pain is a recurring trauma. You might wake up in the morning scared that you’ll hurt all day. You could dread going to bed because you worry you’ll wake up in pain. CBD is thought to help PTSD in a similar way that it helps anxiety.[6] It nourishes an overwrought nervous system, taking the edge off daily fear.
4. It‘s a more natural approach
Simply the act of taking pills can make you feel like an ill person. CBD is easy to take as a beneficial food supplement. You can just put a few drops under your tongue, or mix it into your favourite food or drink.
Infused into tinctures, oils, creams, gels or vape pens, CBD is a great alternative for people who need to function properly throughout the day, who don’t want to rely on potentially dangerous, habit-forming medicine like opioids.
